A suspected methane burst in the Teesta Stage-VI head race tunnel has killed all 25 trapped workers — reopening hard questions on geological risk assessment, ventilation and gas-detection safeguards, clearance compliance and the ethics of building big in a young, restless mountain range. At around 1:04 pm on 20 July 2026, workers excavating the head race tunnel (HRT) of NHPC Limited's 500 MW Teesta Stage-VI hydroelectric project at Samardung in Sikkim's Namchi district struck a pocket of suspected trapped methane. The resulting explosion generated dense fumes and toxic gases and partially damaged the tunnel. All 25 workers trapped inside were killed; the final bodies were retrieved on 23 July after roughly 72 hours of continuous operations involving the NDRF, SDRF, a rescue team from the DG Mines Safety and specialists from Eastern Coalfields.
